On March 27, 2025, the Society for the Analysis of Government and Economics (SAGE) hosted an online lecture entitled "How Can the Government More Effectively Play its Role in Technological Innovation and Industrial Upgrading? The Case of Shenzhen." This lecture was presented by Tang Jie, Member on the Board of Directors of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. The webinar represented the seventeenth installment in SAGE's Lectures in Government and Economics Series.

Speaker Bio:

 

Dr. Tang Jie is a member of the Board of Directors of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. Previously, he served as a member of the National Planning Committee for the 13th and 14th Five-Year Plans at the National Development and Reform Commission and was a member of the 3rd National Expert Committee on Climate Change.

  

He started his career in 1971 and later joined Nankai University in 1979, where he graduated from the Department of Economics and the Institute of Economics with bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. From 1992 to 1993, he was a Fulbright Scholar and a visiting associate professor and research fellowat the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, in addition to serving as deputy director of the Nankai Institute of Economics at Nankai University. In 1995, he transferred to the China DevelopmentInstitute in Shenzhen, China, before joining the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government in 1998. From 2003 to 2007, he served as Secretary General of the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government; from 2007 to 2009, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Shenzhen Municipal People's Congress; and from 2009 to 2015, he served as Deputy Mayor. From 2016/7 to 2022/7, Dr. Tang took on a professorship at the Harbin Institute of Technology's (Shenzhen) HitszSchool of Management and Economics, taking up a level-two professorpositionsince 2018. In November-December 2019, he was also a visiting professor at the Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University in the United States.
